The American Dream, an exercise in Bad Faith.
I had a realization today. I'm sure many of you growing up heard from your parents, "Don't waste your time with Acting, Art, or Music, only one person in a million gets a shot at those paying jobs." Well I was sitting in class today, and these girls (business majors) started arguing loudly with another guy (teaching credential), that he was stupid to become a teacher to avoid the corporate work environment. They were arguing it is not bad as an executive. As soon as they said this, I realized the American Dream is nothing but Bad Faith. What these women were lying to themselves about was the fact they would ever be one of those executives. The statistics prove it, there are almost no women executives in fortune 500 companies, and these are the places people dream of being executives with million dollar perks. How do these women plan on breaking through the glass ceiling? I'm not saying women are inferior. What I am saying is that the American system of Capitalism is set up in such a way that the only people who are going to be executives are going to be White Male's with very rich parents (Bush's, Kennedy's, Rockefeller's, etc.). So even for all the frat boy business majors they are all screwed too. No one has clued them into the fact that the system is setup to pretty much dictate they will not rise above a certain point because they are not old money. This has nothing to do with ability, (look at Dubyah) it is all about who your parents know who can you up with your first great job. These rich white boys don't start from the bottom they start from the very top and in our system that means they are always going to have a better resume then you. Because, they get to start at 21 with a great job, that will probably take you till 45 or 50 to get, IF you're highly talented and lucky.
It angers me that, so many people are willing to settle for the misery of working to death in exchange for a lie.
