Faith is an expression of Trust in mankind.
Someone without Faith does not trust mankind.
Jesus Christ is the ultimate expression of faith because he martyred himself on Faith that he would rise again and that mankind was worthy of redemption.
Conversely, if you have grown up seeing almost nothing but the torment, pain, oppression, apathy, and potential hatred of mankind you become jaded. You become unable and unwilling to trust almost any man to be just, intelligent, non-self destructive.
It is out of this general distrust that Faith is lost. If one has no Faith even in their fellow man to be a decent human being, they will never be able to turn over responsibility of the Universe to an unknowable and improvable being created by the very bad men he does not trust who is supposed to be all knowing, all loving, all present, and yet tolerates evil men.
Worse still, those without Faith receive the greatest pressure to have Faith from those least deserving of it e.g. Republican Hypocrites and Televangelists, holy rollers, Nazi’s, etc.
Consequently, people who grow up being constantly disappointed, tormented, and abused by the inadequacy of mankind, never learn to trust their fellow man and quickly learn to keep their Faith for themselves. If they are successful this will become all the justification they need to maintain their lack of Faith in God and save their Faith only for themselves and those they love.
So you could argue that God is nothing more then an expression of trust in mankind. However, I would not use this to destroy God or Faith. If people were actually worthy of Faith from their fellow man, that Faith is not misplaced and is therefore not a bad thing, because that Faith will empower them to become even more worthy of Faith. On the other hand, people without Faith are not evil or immoral by definition they just see those qualities in the rest of humanity. They too have Faith though, however theirs is confined to the knowable and provable things in their lives that have demonstrated altruistic dependable qualities to them, ie people worthy of Faith without cost to themselves.
Perhaps this is something East and West, theist and atheist, can actually agree upon and finally stop fighting over the details, and work towards making mankind worthy of the Faith so many put into it.

I saw this in Alaska obviously, I thought it was a funny qoute. Are they saying you have to be dumb to find Faith? Or just immoral or evil?
